Sunday, the Hubble Space Telescope captured an image showing two galaxies pushing up against one another on the cusp of merging, some 274 million light years away.

The image showed the galaxies on the brink of a collision.

Astronomers believe the fusion will lead to the production of a new star and the formation of a new compact galaxy.

The European Space Agency called the image an "intergalactic clash of titans."

The Hubble Space Telescope has been in Earth's orbit for around 30 years, during which very few images of this nature have been captured.

Collisions of this scale are rare, due to the fact that stars are very small relative to the distance between them in a galaxy.

Astronomers predicted our very own Milky Way is likely to merge with the Andromeda Galaxy in about 4.5 billion years.
